From term to term - safety advice for parents

As families across the country enjoyed a well-earned half-term break, we advised on some helpful tips so families could have fun safely. Whether you're heading off on a road trip, enrolling your children in holiday clubs, or simply spending more time online, a few simple precautions can make all the difference.

Online Safety for Children

With more free time, children often spend longer online. It's important that parents and carers stay engaged with their children's digital habits. The NSPCC offers resources about helping parents understand the apps and games their children use. Here are a few key tips:

  • Talk regularly with your child about their online activity.
  • Use parental controls on devices and apps.
  • Encourage open communication so children feel safe reporting anything that makes them uncomfortable.
  • Be aware of grooming and exploitation risks, especially on platforms with private messaging.
  • Holiday Clubs and Activities

Many children attend sports camps or activity clubs during the break. Before enrolling your child, ensure the club is safe and reputable:

  • Check for Clubmark accreditation – this is a national standard for quality sports clubs, ensuring proper safeguarding and coaching standards.
  • Visit the venue if possible and speak to staff about their safeguarding policies.
  • Vehicle Safety for Road Trips

If you're planning a long car journey as you do for half-term, take time to prepare your vehicle:

  • Check tyre pressure and tread depth.
  • Top up oil, coolant, and screen wash.
  • Ensure your lights and indicators are working.
  • Plan your route in advance and allow extra time for traffic. Take regular breaks to avoid driver fatigue.
