Surrey’s business community asked to have their say on the impact of retail crime in new survey

Members of the business community who have been directly impacted by retail crime are being urged to share their experiences in a new survey.

It comes as Surrey’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Lisa Townsend, teams up with senior leaders at Surrey Police to gain a true understanding of the scale of retail crime in the county.

The survey asks respondents to have their say on the number of offences experienced, the financial cost caused, and the response from police.

It also provides space for victims to share more about the impact offending has had on them.

You can find it HERE. It will close at 9am on Monday, April 14.

Retail crime is rising in Surrey, as it is around the country.

While the Force must prioritise reports of crime by the risk of serious harm, arrests and resolutions for retail crime are improving.

In the past year:

🔴 Almost 1,300 arrests for shop theft have been made - up from 555 in the preceding 12 months

🔴 The number of retail crimes detected by the Force has more than doubled, from 636 to 1,537

The Commissioner said: "We are determined to deal with offenders robustly and listen closely to the concerns of our business communities.

“Please do have your say. Your voice matters, and we are listening.”

Chief Constable Tim De Meyer said: "We are committed to tackling retail crime head on, relentlessly pursuing those who steal from shops. To do so, we rely on thefts being reported so that we can identify hotspots and trends, act swiftly, and prevent crime from happening, and catch the offenders where it does occur.

"Work continues to deal robustly with offenders of retail crime. We have made great strides in this area, but there is more to do.

“With your help, I am sure we can improve even more.”
