Making Communities Safer: ASB Awareness Week

More than two thirds of people in a recent survey told us they had either been a victim of or witness to antisocial behaviour. But what exactly is it?

ASB covers a wide range of issues including:

  • Antisocial driving/speeding
  • Nuisance noise
  • Drug use or drug dealing
  • Dog fouling
  • Fly tipping
  • Graffiti
  • Littering
  • There are also some things that, while annoying, do not count as ASB:

  • DIY or off-road car repairs (unless late at night or early in the morning)
  • Everyday living noises such as loud conversations, doors opening and closing, and lawnmowers in use
  • One-off occasional events such as birthday parties, barbecues, or other celebrations
  • Lawful use of fireworks
  • Property boundary disputes
  • When polled recently, two thirds of a survey group said that they would contact the police in the first instance about antisocial behaviour. While, in an emergency, we would always encourage you to ring 999, ASB covers so many different issues that may be best dealt with by one of our partner agencies.

Learn more about which organisation takes the lead in dealing with each issue on the Healthy Surrey website: https://www.healthysurrey.org.uk/community-safety/asb/who-deals-with-it

Did you know that you can report antisocial behaviour directly to us via the online reporting form on our website? https://www.surrey.police.uk/ro/report/asb/asb-v3/report-antisocial-behaviour/

In an emergency, always call 999.

Is antisocial behaviour having a negative impact on your daily life? Need support but not sure who can help?

Community Mediation offered by Mediation Surrey might be a step towards a more peaceful life. They offer a means to resolve disputes over issues such as noise, ASB, parking, trees, rubbish, pets, and boundary issues. Their aim is to resolve these issues without the need for lengthy and expensive legal proceedings: https://mediationsurrey.org/community-mediation

Support Coaching is provided by Mediation Surrey and is a service to help people experiencing from ASB or having difficulties with neighbours. They offer help to tackle difficult situations, overcome uncertainty about what to do next, and improve general wellbeing by providing a listening ear, helping to develop coping strategies, and signposting to other sources of support:
