Always stop and think when answering the door to strangers

Criminals are experts at impersonating people. Always stop and think, it could protect you, your money and valuables.

This week, we have been made aware of a couple of incidents across Runnymede whereby suspects have been impersonating others on doorsteps. In one case, a man pretended to be a police officer, but we have also seen council workers being impersonated in this way.

If you open the door to a stranger and were not expecting anyone, always ask for ID and examine it carefully. If you're still unsure, phone the company the person says they're from. Get the number from a bill or a web search.

Don't worry about leaving someone waiting while you check. If they're who they say they are, they won't mind.

If you have a chain on your front door, use this as additional security when answering the door to strangers.

If you feel pressurised or unsure, close the door and report to us straight away here.

In an emergency, always call 999.
