Local News

The new school year has only just started, and we are already receiving complaints about dangerous and inconsiderate parking outside schools in Runnymede. PLEASE… think before you park outside a school. Child pedestrians are some of the MOST VULNERABLE road users in our communities. Students at Darley Dene Primary School have been busy creating posters on road safety for our Youth Engagement Officers. There were some great designs submitted but students Mia and Nethuli won the competition. Well done Mia and Nethuli!

A reminder to those dropping children off to school, DO NOT:

Park on yellow zigzags

Park on white zigzags

Park on double yellow lines

Park on single yellow lines (during their hours of operation) Park opposite or within 10 metres of a junction

Park over dropped kerbs Park in a cycle lane Park on someone else’s driveway

Leave your vehicle in any other position which causes a danger or an obstruction of the highway

We would encourage you to consider walking, cycling or scooting to school wherever possible. Or, if you have to drive, why not park a short distance from the school and walk the rest of the way. You could also consider lift-sharing to reduce the number of vehicles outside our schools.

We know the detrimental impact shoplifting can have on businesses, and one of our priorities is to work alongside owners and shop staff to identify and prosecute thieves. Last week, a shoplifter was jailed for two months and ordered to pay costs after being caught in the act stealing from Boots in Cobham. Robert Keegan, 39, (DOB 28.12.84) from Purley, pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage, one count of theft from a shop, and breach of his Community Penalty Notice (CPN). Keegan was spotted in Boots on the High Street in Cobham on the afternoon of 17 August, helping himself to beauty products before exiting without paying. Staff alerted police and gave a description of the offender and his direction of travel. A nearby officer quickly located Keegan walking along Mill Road carrying two full carrier bags. Keegan ignored the officer’s request for him to stop and tried to hide one of the shopping bags in the bushes. The bag was recovered and found to contain a large quantity of stolen items. Keegan was arrested and charged and was sentenced on October 8.

We understand that the police activity in the Eastmont Road area of Esher over the last few days has caused some concern within the local community. We were called to an address on 8 October where the body of a woman in her 20s was sadly found deceased. An investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding her death. Following our enquiries, we are satisfied that there are not any suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement in her death. A file will be passed to the Coroner in due course.
