Uninvited doorstep callers!

Research shows that the elderly are most vulnerable to doorstep crime. However, anyone can be caught out and be a victim of this criminal activity.

Doorstep crime is when someone comes to your door and attempts to scam you out of money or gain access to your home. These scams can take various guises, including bogus callers and rogue traders or salespeople.

You can help stop this crime by looking out for neighbours, friends and family, and by reporting anything suspicious to the police.

On Tuesday, 24 September, Trading Standards and Surrey Police are hosting a FREE webinar on how to stay safe from doorstep crime – and everyone is welcome to join, from 1-2pm.

Organised criminal gangs target the theft of signalling cables, overhead power lines and electricity substations in rural areas to avoid detection and take advantage of less heavily defended infrastructure, before selling the metal on to scrap metal dealers.

🔴If you witness a theft in progress, call the police on 999.

🔴If you wish to remain anonymous, tell us what you know about suspected criminals by calling 0800 555 111 or use our online form.

🔴You can tell us registration numbers and descriptions of suspicious vehicles.

Be sure to keep a safe distance from any seemingly broken equipment or anyone behaving suspiciously.

🔴Do not touch or go close to any exposed cables, enter open substations or attempt to move dangling cables as they may still be live and, therefore, extremely dangerous.

🔴Ensure children, pets and livestock are kept away from any damaged or exposed electrical equipment.
